So, I wanted to sharpen some of my knives, and a buddy told me about these DMT sharpening stones. I’ve always just used some random stones I picked up from the hardware store, but they never really did the job right. Plus, they were messy and a pain to use. So, I decided to give these DMT things a try.
First thing I did was hop on my computer and do a quick search to see what this DMT stuff was all about. Turns out, they’re these diamond sharpening stones. They’re supposed to be way better than regular stones because the diamonds are super hard and they stay flat, so you get a consistent sharpening angle. Sounded pretty good to me.
I found a set online that had a few different grits – coarse, fine, and extra-fine. That way, I could start with the coarse one to fix any nicks or really dull edges, then move to the finer ones to polish it up real nice. I went ahead and ordered the set, and it showed up at my door a few days later.
When I opened the box, I was surprised at how thin they were. They weren’t like the thick, bulky stones I was used to. These were just thin, metal plates with diamonds embedded on them. They also came with a non-skid mat, which was a nice touch. It kept the stones from sliding around on my workbench.
I grabbed one of my older kitchen knives that had seen better days to test these things out. The edge was pretty dull, and it had a few small chips in it. I started with the coarse stone, following the instructions that came with the set. You just lay the blade flat on the stone, then tilt it slightly to get the right angle. Then, you just push the blade across the stone like you’re trying to slice off a thin layer.
- Coarse stone: I spent a good amount of time on the coarse stone, working out those chips and getting the edge back to a decent starting point.
- Fine stone: After that, I moved on to the fine stone to refine the edge even more. I could already feel the difference – the blade was getting much sharper.
- Extra-fine stone: Finally, I used the extra-fine stone to really polish it up. This one gave it that super sharp, almost mirror-like finish.
Honestly, I was pretty amazed at how well these DMT stones worked. It was way easier than using my old stones, and the results were noticeably better. My knife was slicing through paper like butter afterward. I ended up sharpening all my kitchen knives that day, and even my pocket knife. I’m definitely sold on these things. They’re a bit of an investment upfront, but I think they’re totally worth it if you want to keep your knives in top shape.
