At the start, XXXX is just a man tryin’ to make his way through the murky world of drug deals and dirty business. He’s doin’ alright, but he ain’t at the top yet. The whole movie is about him tryin’ to get to the top, but every step he takes, he’s pullin’ more trouble onto himself. It’s like climbin’ a ladder, but every time you get higher, the rungs get slippier, and you might fall.
Now, the thing about the ending, well, that sure did make my head spin. See, XXXX, played by Daniel Craig—yep, the same fella who’s been James Bond—ends up in a real mess. By the time the end of the movie rolls around, he’s made so many deals and double-crosses, it’s hard to keep track. All these folks are after him, and he don’t even know who to trust anymore. It’s like a big ol’ pot of stew where everything’s boilin’ over.
So, what happens in the end?
Well, after all the back and forth, all the lies and the betrayals, XXXX thinks he’s out of it. He’s got Tammy by his side, ready to walk out and leave the whole mess behind. But uh-oh, things ain’t gonna be so simple. Just when you think he’s gonna get away scot-free, that Sidney fella comes outta nowhere. He’s mad at XXXX for, well, somethin’ to do with a woman, and it seems like Sidney’s got a real chip on his shoulder about it.

Now, Sidney shoots XXXX right there on the steps. Poor ol’ XXXX ends up bleedin’ out in the street, all because of some woman trouble. Ain’t that always the way? One minute, you’re walkin’ outta the club with your girl, and the next, you’re on the ground, just tryin’ to breathe. It don’t matter how high you climb in this business, someone’s always got their knife ready for you when you ain’t lookin’.
And then, you gotta think about them pills, don’t you? The whole movie’s been about them dang pills, and at the end, it turns out that the Serbs think the British police stole ’em. But guess what? The police weren’t even real police! They were just fake cops, dressed up to pull a fast one. So, the pills get handed over to XXXX, and he’s supposed to deliver them to Eddie Temple, who’s one of the big shots. But before that can happen, folks get shot up, and everything just goes sideways.
So what’s the final twist?
Well, Shanks and Trevor, they end up with the pills in the end. That’s right, them two no-good fellas end up with everything, after all the mess. They were the ones pullin’ the strings the whole time, and it turns out they were playin’ everyone, even XXXX. It’s all a big ol’ game, and the players at the top win, just like always.
Some folks might say the movie’s got a happy ending. There’s a version of it where XXXX makes the Serbs think that the police took their pills, and he gets out clean. But the real ending, the one they chose to go with, is darker. It shows you how no matter what you do, in this world, the good guys don’t always win. Sometimes, you’re just a pawn in someone else’s game.
So what’s the lesson in all this?
Well, I reckon it’s this: in the world of business, and especially in the underworld, there’s always someone above you, and no one’s ever truly safe. You climb up, you get knocked down, and at the end of it all, you don’t know who to trust. It’s all one big, messy, layered cake, and you might just end up with a piece that’s too bitter to swallow.
All in all, “Layer Cake” ain’t your typical crime movie. It don’t tie up nice and neat at the end. It leaves you thinkin’, wonderin’ what happened to all these folks. Who’s left standing, and who’s been taken down? Well, I suppose that’s the way it goes when you’re playin’ in the big leagues.
