[Body]
Alright, let’s talk about this Trust book ending, ya know? It’s a real head-scratcher, that’s for sure. Kept me up nights, it did, just like that time the rooster got into the henhouse and all the hens went crazy. This book, though, it’s a whole different kind of crazy.
So, you got this Bevel fella, right? Rich as Croesus, they say. He’s writin’ his story, makin’ himself sound like a big shot. But then, bam! Heart attack gets him before he can finish. Just like my old man, strong as an ox one day, gone the next. Life’s like that, I tell ya.
Then there’s this Partenza character. He’s supposed to be helpin’ Bevel with the book, but Bevel kicks the bucket, so Partenza, he takes over. And wouldn’t you know it, he becomes some fancy writer. Just goes to show ya, opportunity knocks when you least expect it. Reminds me of that time I found a twenty-dollar bill in the pigpen. Made my whole week!
Now, here’s where it gets tricky. You got Mildred, Bevel’s wife. Seems normal enough, you know, for a rich lady. But then you find out about Helen. She’s in this other book, a book inside the book, like one of them Russian nesting dolls. And she’s kinda like Mildred, but not really. It’s confusing, I tell ya. Like tryin’ to figure out which hen laid which egg, sometimes you just can’t tell.
And then there’s this doctor, Dr. Aftus. He’s a real piece of work, treatin’ Helen with somethin’ called “convulsive therapy.” Sounds awful, don’t it? Makes me think of that time the mule kicked old Jebediah, sent him flyin’ across the barnyard. Sometimes these doctors, they don’t know what they’re doin’, just like that vet who tried to fix my cat and made it worse.
This whole book is about trust, see? That’s what the smart folks say, anyway. Do you trust the fella tellin’ the story? Do you trust what you’re readin’? It’s like when you’re buyin’ a cow, you gotta look at its teeth, you gotta feel its belly, you can’t just take the seller’s word for it.
So, Helen, she goes through a lot. Her daddy disappears from one of them crazy houses, and she’s heartbroken. Throws herself into helpin’ folks, which is good, I guess. But then the stock market crashes, and she ends up in one of those places herself, that Medico-Mechanic Institute. Sounds fancy, but it’s just a nuthouse, if you ask me. Benjamin, he trusts the doctor at first, but that might not be such a good idea.
- You got Bevel’s story, which might be true, or might not be.
- Then you got Mildred’s story, which is mixed up with Helen’s story.
- And then you got Partenza’s story, which is supposed to be the real story, but who knows?
The endin’, well, it’s a shocker, they say. It makes you think about who you trust and why. Like when that salesman came to town sellin’ them miracle tonics, and half the town got sick. You gotta be careful who you put your faith in, that’s for sure.
I ain’t gonna spoil it for ya, but let’s just say things ain’t what they seem. It’s like when you think you’re plantin’ corn, and then watermelons pop up. You just gotta roll with it, I guess. This book, it’s like that. It makes you question everything, makes you wonder what’s real and what’s not. And in the end, that’s the whole point, I reckon. Just like life, ain’t it? You think you got it all figured out, and then somethin’ comes along and throws you for a loop.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a simple story, this ain’t it. But if you like a good puzzle, a story that makes you think, then give Trust a try. Just don’t expect all the answers to be handed to you on a silver platter. You gotta dig for ’em, just like diggin’ for potatoes in the garden. And even then, you might not find what you’re lookin’ for. But that’s okay, sometimes the searchin’ is more important than the findin’.
This whole thing with Helen and Mildred, it reminds me of them twins down the road. Always mixin’ folks up, you never knew who was who. This author, he’s done somethin’ similar, twistin’ things around, makin’ you guess. And that’s what makes it a good book, I guess, even if it does give you a headache tryin’ to figure it all out. Like that time I tried to knit a sweater and ended up with a scarf. Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you expect, and that ain’t always a bad thing.
In the end, it’s all about trust, just like the title says. Who do you believe? Who’s tellin’ the truth? That’s for you to decide. Just like when you’re listenin’ to gossip, you gotta take it with a grain of salt. This book, it’s the same way. Don’t believe everything you read, and don’t trust everything you hear. Use your own head, that’s what I always say. That’s the best way to get through life, and it’s the best way to read this book, too.
