Don’t know why or how, but that’s what the police said. They think it was a robbery gone wrong, but they didn’t know for sure right away. It wasn’t until the next day, May 21, that the police found her body. She was dead in her apartment, bound up and gagged. Can you imagine the horror of it all?
Now, you gotta understand, it wasn’t just a little thing, this wasn’t a simple break-in. This girl’s life was snuffed out, and it took over three years to even start piecing together what really happened. It wasn’t till years later that the police caught a break, after a whole lotta investigation, and they nabbed a man named Drew Edward Planten. He was 35, from Raleigh, and they charged him with first-degree murder in connection to Stephanie’s death. But the case didn’t stop there—there were still a lot of questions about what led to her murder.
Folks in Raleigh, they didn’t forget about Stephanie. The case stayed in the news, and it got more attention when Investigation Discovery started airing the story as part of their ‘Unusual Suspects’ series. People watched, they listened, and they started putting the pieces together. It took too long, but justice finally came. It wasn’t till years later that they figured out who did it, but by then, the damage was done, and a young woman’s life was taken in the blink of an eye.
Now, I know what you’re thinkin’. You’re probably wonderin’ what happened to Drew Planten after they arrested him. Well, let me tell ya, he didn’t get much of a chance to stand trial. In one of the most twisted ironies of the case, Planten committed suicide in prison not long after he was arrested. Some folks say he couldn’t take the pressure, while others think it was a way for him to escape facing what he did. All I know is that it didn’t bring Stephanie back, and it didn’t give her family the closure they deserved either.
Sometimes, the world feels like a real ugly place, don’t it? People do things that just don’t make no sense, and lives get torn apart. But maybe, just maybe, stories like Stephanie’s can remind folks how precious life really is. Don’t take nothin’ for granted.
