Okay, so I’ve been on a serious historical drama kick lately, and after devouring “Alias Grace,” I was left wanting more. I mean, that show was captivating! The atmosphere, the mystery, the complex female lead… I needed to find something similar. So, I started digging, and here’s what I did:
First, I jumped onto Google. Just a simple search, you know? “Shows like Alias Grace.” That gave me a bunch of articles and lists, which was a decent starting point.
Then, I scrolled through a few of those lists. I jotted down some names that popped up repeatedly: “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Outlander,” “The Crown,” stuff like that. Seemed promising, but I needed more details.

So, I headed over to Reddit. There are whole communities dedicated to TV shows, and I figured people there would have some strong opinions. I searched within the r/television and r/perioddramas subreddits. Much better! Real people talking about shows, not just some random website.
I spent a good hour just reading through threads. I found some interesting suggestions that weren’t on the initial lists, like “Gentleman Jack” and “Harlots.” People were describing the plots, the characters, and the overall vibe. It gave me more to go on.
The next step was to look into those individual, and less popular, shows in more detail. I checked out some trailers on YouTube to get a visual sense of the shows. That’s important, right? You gotta see the costumes, the sets, and the actors to see if it catches your interest.
After all that, I narrowed it down to a handful of shows that really seemed to hit the “Alias Grace” sweet spot. I made a list of the ones that looked the most promising and added them to my watch queue.
My Current “To-Watch” List
- “The Handmaid’s Tale” – Everyone keeps talking about it, so it must be good, it is also by the same book author.
- “Gentleman Jack”– Seems like a bold female protagonist, which I love.
- “Harlots”– Set in 18th-century London, intriguing premise.
- “Belgravia”– I saw some reviews that made comparisons to alias grace.
- “The Alienist”-I noticed similar themes of a psychological nature that piqued my interest.
I started with “Gentleman Jack,” and I’m already hooked! It’s got that historical setting, strong characters, and a bit of mystery. Definitely scratching that “Alias Grace” itch. I will have to keep trying the rest and seeing if they also hold up, but for now, I’m happy with how it is going!
