Movies Like The Spiderwick Chronicles: Explore More Fantasy Films for Kids and Family Fun Time!

Okay, so, I’ve been on this quest, right? A quest to find movies like “The Spiderwick Chronicles.” I loved that movie. The magic, the adventure, the whole shebang. So I thought, why not try to find other movies that give off the same vibe? I mean I could watch this movie over and over again, which I might do but also I wanted to find other films that were great.

First thing I did was just think about what I liked about “The Spiderwick Chronicles.” It’s got that fantasy element, kids on an adventure, a bit of mystery, and some cool creatures. So, I started jotting down some movies that popped into my head that had at least a couple of those things.

Then, I hit up the internet. I typed in “movies like The Spiderwick Chronicles” into a search engine and scrolled through a bunch of lists. Some suggestions were spot on, others, not so much. But that’s okay, it’s all part of the process, you know?

  • Started making a list of the ones that seemed promising.
  • Checked out trailers for some of them, just to get a feel for the movie.
  • Read some reviews, but I tried not to let those sway me too much. I like to form my own opinions.

After all that, I had a pretty decent list. I decided to start watching them, one by one. Some I watched with my kids, others I watched on my own when I had some free time in the evenings.

Here’s what I watched, and what I thought:

“Narnia” movies: These were a good start. They definitely have that magical world and adventure feel. Plus, kids as the main characters, just like Spiderwick.

“Jumanji (the new ones)”: Okay, these were a bit of a stretch, but I included them because they’ve got that adventure vibe, and they’re pretty funny. Not exactly magical creatures, but hey, a giant, scary jungle counts for something, right?

“A Wrinkle in Time”: This one was a bit more out there, but it had some cool visuals and the whole “traveling to different worlds” thing going on.

“Labyrinth”: An oldie but a goodie, this one has that fantasy aspect down for sure, and a teenage main character is also a big part of this film, and what a soundtrack!

“Bridge to Terabithia”: Man, this movie made me tear up, but it was also really good. It doesn’t have as much fantasy, but it has that coming-of-age and friendship part that was seen in “The Spiderwick Chronicles” that I enjoyed, you know, where it was the kids taking on a major task, even though some of it was in their imagination.

So, yeah, that’s been my movie-watching journey lately. It’s been fun, and I’ve discovered some new favorites. It’s always cool to dive into a new (or new-to-you) movie, right? I hope this has helped inspire some of you to check out some new movies or even do your own movie search.
