Okay, so the other day I was scrolling through my usual movie sites, and I stumbled upon this classic, “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” I’d seen it before, but it got me thinking, what are some other movies that give off that same vibe? You know, that gritty, classic Western feel. So, I started digging.
First, I jotted down some notes about what I liked about “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” It’s got that revenge plot, the lone wolf protagonist, and it’s all set against the backdrop of the Civil War. Plus, Clint Eastwood is just awesome. I made a note of that, too. Clint Eastwood movies were definitely going to be on my list.
Then I hit up some movie forums. I figured, who better to ask than a bunch of movie buffs, right? I found this one thread where people were talking about movies similar to “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” Someone mentioned “High Plains Drifter,” another Eastwood flick. I’d seen it, but it was a while ago, so I decided to give it another watch. They were right; it has a similar feel.
Next, I dove into this website, Letterboxd. Apparently, they have a whole section on movies similar to other movies. I typed in “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” and boom, a list of 78 similar films popped up. 78! I was like, “whoa, that’s a lot.” I started skimming through the list, making a note of the ones that caught my eye.
My Watchlist
- High Plains Drifter – Because, like I said, it’s an Eastwood movie, and it’s got that lone wanderer thing going on.
- True Grit (2010) – I saw someone mention this one, and I remember liking it when it came out. It’s got that whole Western justice thing.
- Django Unchained (2012) – Okay, this one is a bit more modern, but it’s still got that gritty, revenge-driven plot, set during slavery times.
- The Hateful Eight (2015) – Another Tarantino film. It’s a bit more contained, mostly taking place in one location, but it’s got that classic Western tension.
- Bone Tomahawk (2015) – This one sounds a bit brutal, but intriguing. Apparently, it’s about a group of men who set out to rescue some people from cannibalistic cave dwellers. Sounds wild.
- Hostiles (2017) – This one is about a cavalry officer who has to escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal lands. Sounds like it’s got some depth.
- The Harder They Fall (2021) – A more recent one, but it sounds pretty cool. It’s about an outlaw who finds out his enemy is being released from prison, so he gets his gang back together to get revenge.
- The Revenant (2015) – This one’s more of a survival story, but it’s set in the wilderness, and it’s definitely got that gritty, raw feel. I remember the bear scene, man, that was intense.
So yeah, I ended up with a pretty solid list. I even re-watched “The Outlaw Josey Wales” just to, you know, refresh my memory and compare it to the others. It’s still a great movie. I realized, it is deeply entangled in both American history. But now I’ve got a bunch of other movies to check out, and I’m pretty excited about it. This whole thing just reminded me how much I love a good Western.
I will share my experience after I finish watching these movies, and I really hope to find some other good movies like “The Outlaw Josey Wales”!
