Okay, so the other day I was watching “The Color Purple,” the new one, you know? And man, it just hit me right in the feels, just like the old one did. I was thinking, “I need more movies like this in my life.” So, I started digging around, trying to find some similar stuff.
First, I just went straight to the usual suspects, like Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes. I typed in “The Color Purple” and started looking at what they recommended. There were a few good ones there, but nothing that really grabbed me. I even checked out Disney+, just in case. They had “tick, tick… BOOM,” which is a great movie, but not really what I was looking for.
Then, I remembered this website called Letterboxd. It’s like a social network for movie nerds. I figured if anyone would know about movies similar to “The Color Purple,” it would be the folks on Letterboxd. I started browsing through lists and reviews, and I found some interesting titles. One that kept popping up was “Dreamgirls.” Apparently, it’s got a similar vibe, with the music and all.
I also came across some articles talking about “The Color Purple.” One of them mentioned how the book won a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize. That got me thinking about other movies based on award-winning books. I found “Out of Africa,” which won a bunch of Oscars. I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s definitely on my list now.
While I was reading about “The Color Purple,” I stumbled upon some quotes from the movie. One of them was, ”Who you think you is? You can curse nobody. Look at you. Your black, you’re poor, you’re ugly, you’re a woman, you’re nothing at all!” That line just stuck with me. It’s so powerful and heartbreaking at the same time. It reminded me of how much the characters in this movie go through.
Here’s what I found:
- Dreamgirls (2006): Seems like a good choice if you like the musical aspect of “The Color Purple.”
- Out of Africa: Based on an award-winning book, just like “The Color Purple.”
- And a bunch of other movies that were mentioned on Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes, but I can’t remember their names right now.
So yeah, that’s where I’m at right now. I’ve got a few leads, but I’m still on the hunt for more movies like “The Color Purple.” If you’ve got any suggestions, let me know! I’m all ears.
