Well, now, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to watch that’s got a little bit of everything, let me tell ya, “Lying to Be Perfect” is a good choice. It’s one of them films where a woman, just like us, got a lotta weight on her shoulders – and I don’t just mean that in the physical way. She’s a magazine editor, not too fancy, but she’s real smart and hardworkin’. Now, she leads a double life, you hear? By day she’s a regular ol’ editor, but by night, she’s a sassy advice columnist, giving all sorts of advice to folks, pretending she’s got her life all figured out. But the catch is, she’s keepin’ a big secret. She don’t want no one to know it’s her, so she goes and loses weight, tryin’ to be something she ain’t. That’s how the story goes.
So, this here woman, Nola Devlin, that’s her name, she’s a little on the heavier side and feels like she don’t quite measure up in the beauty department, ya know? She’s got two good friends who help her along the way, and together they all make a pact to lose some weight and look better. I tell ya, it ain’t just about the weight. It’s more about how she tries to juggle her real self with that perfect image she wants to project. It’s a lot of struggle, but also kinda funny, ’cause we all know how hard it is to keep up appearances.
Now, the thing that really gets ya in this story is that it’s all about image, but also about being honest with yourself. See, Nola, she keeps lying to people about who she really is, all in the name of looking perfect. But the truth’s gonna come out sooner or later, right? The film’s got a lotta good moments where you see her tryin’ to balance her work life, her pretend life, and the real her that she’s hidin’. But at the end of the day, you gotta accept yourself for who you are, flaws and all. Ain’t nobody perfect. No matter how hard you try, you can’t fool everyone all the time.
The movie shows a lot about friendship too. Her two friends who are helpin’ her with the weight loss, they ain’t perfect neither. They got their own problems, but they stick together and help each other out. That’s the good part. In the end, it ain’t about being perfect on the outside, it’s about feelin’ good on the inside, and maybe learnin’ to laugh at yourself a bit more.
If you’re thinkin’ about watchin’ “Lying to Be Perfect,” you can find it on a few places. Ain’t no trouble watchin’ it on Amazon Prime Video, or even Freevee or Pluto TV, if you don’t mind a few ads here and there. If you’re like me and like to own your movies, you can rent it on Apple TV or Amazon Video too. But, ya know, if you ask me, the best part of the whole thing is the message it sends. You don’t have to pretend to be somethin’ you ain’t. Just be your own self. Ain’t nobody else can do that for ya.
So, go ahead and give it a watch. You might just find yourself laughin’, cryin’, and maybe even lookin’ at your own life a little differently. It’s one of them movies that sticks with ya, even after it’s all over.
