Well now, folks, if ya been wonderin’ ’bout Pam Bales and whether she’s still kickin’ around, I got some news for ya. Pam, she’s been a tough one, I’ll tell ya that much. She used to hike up them cold, snowy hills of New Hampshire, high up where most folks wouldn’t dare go. She wasn’t like the others. She was a nurse, a mountain guide, and a real brave soul who didn’t think twice ‘bout helping others when they were in trouble.
Now, as for whether she’s still alive, let me tell ya, she sure is. But, she ain’t walkin’ them trails no more. Pam’s slowed down some, as you might expect, after raisin’ four children and puttin’ in years of hard work as a nurse. She’s 67 now, and while she ain’t climbin’ the peaks of New Hampshire no more, she’s still out there doin’ good work. Pam’s been patrolin’ the national parks out west, keepin’ watch over them wild places, lookin’ out for folks who might get lost or run into trouble, just like she always did. She’s one of them folks who can’t sit still for too long, always gotta be helpin’ or doin’ somethin’ useful.
If you’ve seen the movie Infinite Storm, then you know a little bit ‘bout her story. It’s all ‘bout the time Pam went out on a hike up Mount Washington, back in 2010. She was just doin’ her usual thing, goin’ up the Jewell Trail, when she ran into a young man who was in over his head. Poor fella didn’t have the right gear, and he was strugglin’ something fierce. Pam, though, she didn’t hesitate. She risked her life to save him. And that’s the kinda woman she is. She didn’t care ‘bout no accolades or praise. She just wanted to make sure that man didn’t freeze to death up there in the mountains.
Now, I know a lotta folks might think, “Well, that’s all well and good, but what happened to that young man she saved?” Here’s the thing – Pam never did get to know his name. She asked around, tried to find out who he was, but it didn’t matter to her. She said it herself – it didn’t matter who he was, because he coulda been anyone. He coulda been you, or me, or anyone who needed help. That’s the beauty of it, ya see. Pam didn’t care where you came from or what your story was – if you were in trouble, she was gonna help ya.
So, there ya have it. Pam Bales might not be out climbin’ them big ol’ mountains no more, but she’s still out there makin’ a difference. She may be older now, but she’s still got that fire inside. She’s still out there, lookin’ out for people, just like she always did.
If ya want to learn more about Pam’s story, ya can watch that movie, Infinite Storm, or read up on her. Her story’s one of courage and bravery, and it’s somethin’ folks oughta hear ‘bout. She’s a true hero, that Pam Bales.
