Okay, so I’ve been on this huge kick lately, diving deep into weird, artsy horror movies. You know, the kind that messes with your head, not just scares you with jump scares. So, naturally, I rewatched Possession (1981) the other night – that film is just nuts. And afterward, I got this itch to find more movies that give off that same vibe. It’s a tough one, because Possession is so unique, but I gave it my best shot.
First, I spent like an hour just Googling. Seriously, I typed in everything: “movies like Possession 1981,” “psychological horror similar to Possession,” “surreal horror movies,” “movies with intense acting like Possession”… you name it, I searched it. My search history is probably a mess now.
My Brainstorm Session
I grabbed a notebook and started jotting down what I really wanted. It wasn’t just about monsters or anything. Here’s what I was looking for, roughly:
- Intense emotional performances – like, REALLY intense.
- A feeling of dread and unease, even when nothing “scary” is happening.
- Weird, symbolic stuff. Not everything needs to make perfect sense.
- Something that sticks with you, makes you think.
- Maybe a focus on relationships falling apart.
The Deep Dive into Forums and Lists
After getting my thoughts together, I hit up Reddit. There are some great subreddits for horror fans, so I posted in a few, asking for suggestions. I also checked out some older threads on the same topic. People always have good ideas, even if it takes some digging.
I also looked at a bunch of “best of” lists online. “Best psychological horror,” “best art-house horror,” that kind of thing. I skimmed through a lot, looking for titles I didn’t recognize, or ones that kept popping up on multiple lists.
Narrowing It Down
It was overwhelming, honestly. So many movies! So I started making a shortlist. I focused on films that seemed to hit at least a couple of my criteria. I also tried to find trailers or clips on YouTube to get a feel for the movie’s atmosphere.
The Watch List
After all that digging, I’ve got a pretty solid list of movies to check out. Some of them are older, some newer. It’s a real mix, but I’m excited to start watching. I’ll probably update this later with my thoughts after I’ve seen a few. It’s going to be a wild ride, I can already tell!
