Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this heaven and hell thing, ya know? It ain’t like them fancy folks in the city talk about it, all complicated and whatnot.
What’s this heaven, anyway? Some say it’s up there, in the clouds, with angels playin’ harps and whatnot. Sounds kinda boring to me, to be honest. Like, whatcha gonna do all day, just float around? I like my feet on the ground, workin’ in the garden, ya know? But them preachers, they say it’s about bein’ with God. Bein’ happy all the time, no more aches and pains. That sounds alright, I guess, especially after a long day of hoein’ the fields.
- No more back pain?
- Always happy?
- Sounds good to me.
Now, hell, that’s a different story. Folks talk about fire and brimstone, devils pokin’ ya with pitchforks. Sounds mighty uncomfortable, if ya ask me. But see, I think it’s more than just fire. It’s about bein’ away from God, bein’ alone, and unhappy. Like when your crops fail, or your family’s sick, and there ain’t nothin’ you can do about it. That’s a kinda hell right there on earth.
Some folks sing songs about it, ya know? “Sing me a song, you’re a singer / Do me a wrong, you’re a bringer of evil.” That makes sense, don’t it? Doin’ wrong, hurtin’ others, that’s the devil’s work. And the devil, he ain’t makin’ nothin’ good. He’s just takin’, takin’, takin’. “The Devil is never a maker / The less that you give.” That’s the truth right there.
Is it forever, this heaven and hell thing? That’s what they say. Forever happy, or forever sad. It makes ya think, don’t it? Makes ya wanna be a good person, help others, so you end up on the right side. It ain’t always easy, though. Life throws ya curveballs, ya know? Sometimes you get angry, sometimes you get jealous. But you gotta try, gotta keep tryin’ to do what’s right.
Them city folks with their books and learnin’, they talk about souls that never die. And heaven bein’ a reward for the good folks. I dunno about all that soul stuff. I just know what I see, what I feel. And I feel like doin’ good is better than doin’ bad. Treatin’ folks right is better than treatin’ ’em wrong.
And it ain’t just about what happens after ya die, ya see? It’s about how ya live your life right now. Do ya help your neighbor when they need it? Do ya share what ya got, even when ya don’t have much? That’s what really matters. That’s how ya make your own little piece of heaven right here on earth. And if ya do that, maybe, just maybe, that bigger heaven won’t be so boring after all.
So, heaven and hell, it’s more than just clouds and fire. It’s about how ya live, how ya treat people, and what’s in your heart. It’s about choosin’ good over evil, every single day. And that ain’t always easy, but it’s worth it. ‘Cause at the end of the day, all we got is each other, ain’t that right?
And that Bible, it talks about all this, I hear. Peter and them other fellas, writin’ about it all. But even if ya can’t read all them fancy words, ya still know right from wrong. Ya just gotta listen to that little voice inside ya, the one that tells ya to be kind, to be generous, to be good. That’s the voice of heaven, right there in your own heart.
And the other voice? The one that tells you to be selfish, to be mean, to be cruel? Well, ya know where that one comes from. So, listen to the good voice, and maybe, just maybe, things will work out alright in the end, ya know? It’s like plantin’ seeds, ya plant good seeds, ya get good crops, ya plant bad seeds, well, ya know the rest. Heaven and hell, it’s kinda like that, seems to me.
