Alright, let’s talk about this show, “Echo.” I just finished binging it, and man, what a ride! First off, I had to actually find the darn thing. It’s on both Disney+ and Hulu, which is a first for a Marvel show, I think. And get this – it’s rated TV-MA. So, you gotta check your Disney+ settings ’cause if it’s still on the default TV-14, you won’t even see “Echo” listed. I found this out the hard way, took me a bit to realize why I couldn’t find it anywhere!
Once I got that sorted, I dove right in. Five episodes, all dropped at once on January 9th, 2024. Nice to just plow through it all in one go.
So, the show’s about Maya Lopez, also known as Echo. She’s not your typical hero. Definitely in that anti-hero category. This girl’s got some serious rage issues, which, you know, isn’t exactly what you look for in a “superhero.” But, once she deals with her family stuff, you can’t really call her a villain anymore, either.
Let’s break down the episodes:
- Episode 1: This one’s all about Maya’s backstory. We see how she got to where she is. It starts all weird with these people coming up from underwater pools and drinking from some ancient pool. Also, it shows how she came to be where she is in life and why she had that revenge on Kingpin.
- Episode 2: This episode includes an extended flashback–steeped in real-life mythology and history–stretching back to the creation of the first Choctaw and other heroes from the Nation’s.
- Episode 3: Maya leaves Biscuits to head over to the local store. Skully is there, and he sells the gear to him. Meanwhile, Maya has to face the consequences of her actions.
- Episode 4: I’m not gonna spoil too much, but let’s just say things get pretty intense. They set up a lot of the action for the final episode.
- Episode 5: Boom! The finale. We see a young Maya, then she deals with the fallout from the previous episodes. I will say it’s a pretty satisfying conclusion.
Final Thoughts
Overall, “Echo” is a pretty cool show. It’s dark, it’s gritty, and it’s definitely not for kids. It is set after the events of 2021’s Hawkeye, in which Maya Lopez exacted her revenge on Kingpin. But it’s a good addition to the Marvel universe, and I’m glad I watched it. Just remember to change those Disney+ settings first!
