Now, let’s talk about the big twist in this episode. There’s a fella by the name of Leonard Patz, played by that actor Daniel Henshall. This fella, he’s a real bad one, a pedophile who’s been showin’ up in the show now and then. Turns out, he’s the one who done killed Ben. Yep, he admits to the whole thing, and to make it all more twisted, he leaves behind a suicide note before hangin’ himself. He says he done it, and that’s how Jacob gets off the hook. The trial ends, and the jury declares Jacob innocent. But it don’t feel like a victory—more like a relief mixed with a heap of sadness, ya know?
Now, the show’s creator, Mark Bomback, said he changed this ending from the book. In the book, Jacob’s mama, Laurie, don’t know the truth, and things end up a whole lot messier. But Bomback thought this here ending made more sense for the story they was tellin’. It’s a real dark story, and the way it ends, with that big ol’ twist, it feels like it fits with everything that’s happened up till now.
