Okay, so I’ve been on this huge anime kick lately, and I had to find more shows like “Special A.” You know, that whole vibe – rivals, romance, a bit of comedy, and characters that are just ridiculously good at everything. I spent, like, a whole weekend just diving deep into this, so here’s what I did.
First Steps: The Obvious
First, I rewatched “Special A” – gotta get back into that headspace, right? I made a list. Seriously, a literal, physical list of things I loved about it:
- The rivalry: Hikari and Kei’s constant competition was everything.
- The romance: Slow burn, a little oblivious, but super sweet.
- The elite squad: The whole S.A class, with their quirky personalities, was so fun.
- The over-the-top-ness: Let’s be real, they were all, like, superhumanly talented.
Deep Dive into Recommendations
After that, I started trawling through online, asking in forums, and I got a ton of recommendations. It was kinda messy. I felt a bit frustrated because I spent lots of time trying to find good recommendations. I’ll exclude the ones I didn’t try, because I didn’t have time.

So, after filtering out the ones that didn’t really fit, I watched those two, I think they are really fit my taste.
- Kaichou wa Maid-sama!: This one kept popping up. The main girl, Misaki, is secretly working at a maid cafe, and the popular guy, Usui, finds out. It’s got that whole “secret life” thing going on, and the romance is chef’s kiss. Their dynamic is the best part.
- Ouran High School Host Club:Okay, hear me out. It’s not exactly the same, but it’s got that “elite school” and “slightly ridiculous” vibe. Haruhi, a scholarship student, accidentally breaks a vase and has to work as a host to pay it off. The characters are hilarious, and there’s a good dose of romance, too.
The Verdict?
Were these shows exactly like “Special A”? Nope. But did they scratch that same itch? Absolutely. They’ve got the competition, the adorable (and sometimes frustrating) romance, and a cast of characters you can’t help but love. I’m pretty happy with my anime weekend – mission accomplished, I’d say!
