Okay, so I’ve been diving into this whole Alan Wanzenberg and Jed Johnson rabbit hole, and let me tell you, it’s been a trip. I started out knowing absolutely nothing, just saw the names somewhere and thought, “Hmm, sounds interesting.”
The Initial Dig
First thing I did, obviously, was hit up the search engines. Just typed in “Alan Wanzenberg Jed Johnson” and see what popped up. Lots of fancy architecture and design stuff, which, I gotta admit, isn’t usually my thing. But the images were pretty stunning, so I kept going.
I started by looking at a bunch of different websites that showcase interior design and architecture. I was trying to get a feel for their style, you know? What made them, them.

- I spent a good chunk of time just scrolling through pictures. Houses, apartments, offices… you name it, they probably designed it.
- I noticed a lot of clean lines, kind of modern but with a warm, comfortable vibe. Not stark or cold, like some modern stuff can be.
- I also saw a lot of natural materials – wood, stone, that sort of thing.
Getting Deeper
Then I started trying to figure out who these guys actually were. Separate the individuals, you know?
I found out that they were partners, both in life and in work, for a long time. Jed Johnson, sadly, passed away in the TWA Flight 800 crash. That was a whole other emotional detour, reading about that.
Alan Wanzenberg, I learned, continued their work after Johnson’s death, and he’s still a big name in the design world.
I even tried to find some interviews or articles where they talked about their process, but those were a little harder to come by. I did find some quotes here and there, though, that gave me a little more insight into their thinking.
Putting it All Together
So, after all this digging, what did I actually do? Well, I created a little mood board for myself. Just a collection of images and words that captured the essence of their style, as I understood it. Kind of a visual reminder of what I’d learned.
I also started thinking about how I could incorporate some of their design principles into my own space. I’m not about to go full-on redecorating, but maybe I can bring in some of that natural, calming vibe in small ways.
I played around with rearranging the furniture, putting the most comfortable and pratical sofa to sit.
It was a fun little project, and I definitely learned a lot. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you just follow a random spark of curiosity. And, honestly my room looks much better!
