Okay, so I’ve been on this HUGE historical drama kick lately, and, of course, “Braveheart” is like, the king of that genre. I watched it again recently, and it got me thinking, “What else gives me that same epic, historical, fight-for-freedom feeling?” I needed more!
So, first, I did what anyone would do – I Googled it. Yep, straight up typed in “movies similar to Braveheart.” You get a million lists, right? Some are helpful, some are…not so much.
I started jotting down some of the movies that popped up a lot:

- Gladiator: This one was everywhere. Makes sense, big battles, Roman Empire, revenge…
- Rob Roy: I’d seen this one before, but it’s been ages. Scottish, similar time period to “Braveheart”… definitely worth a rewatch.
- Kingdom of Heaven: Crusades, epic battles. Seemed like a good fit.
- The Last of the Mohicans:Different setting, french and Indian war, and colonial America.
Then I started thinking about what I specifically liked about “Braveheart.” It wasn’t just the battles, it was the whole underdog, fighting-against-tyranny thing. So I added a few more based on that:
- 300:Super stylized, so it is not everyones cup of tea. But, Spartan’s last stand? Definitely fits the theme.
I started watching, working my way through the list. “Gladiator” was awesome, of course. “Rob Roy” was great, a bit slower-paced than “Braveheart,” but still really good. “Kingdom of Heaven” was…okay. It had its moments, but it didn’t quite grab me the same way. I am going to continue adding to my list and wathcing more movies.
It is a never-ending process, and so much fun. But now, I have got a solid list to keep me going, and it all started with that simple Google search and then just thinking a bit more about why I loved “Braveheart” in the first place.
