Movies like Portrait of a Lady on Fire: Period Pieces with Great Stories.

Alright, so I’ve been on this huge kick lately of finding movies that give me the same feels as “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” That movie just wrecked me, in the best way, you know? So, I started digging around, and here’s how it went down.

My Little Quest Started

First, I just straight-up Googled “movies like Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” I mean, that’s the obvious first move, right? The results were…okay. I got some of the usual suspects, some period dramas, some LGBTQ+ films, but nothing really clicked. A lot of lists, but not a lot of feeling, you get me?

Diving Deeper

So I thought, “Okay, what exactly am I looking for?” It’s not just about the setting, or even the romance, necessarily. It’s about that slow burn, that intense connection, the beautiful cinematography, the quiet moments that speak volumes. all of them!

I started getting more specific with my searches. I tried things like:

  • “slow burn historical romance movies”
  • “visually stunning lgbtq+ films”
  • “movies with intense female leads”
  • “movies with quiet, powerful emotions”

This is where I started getting somewhere. I found some movie forums and some Letterboxd lists. People were throwing around names I hadn’t heard of, which was exciting. I think!

Making My Own List

I started a little list on my phone, jotting down any movie that sounded even remotely promising. I watched a bunch of trailers – seriously, so many trailers. My YouTube “Watch Later” list is out of control now, just a suggestion.

The Screening Process

Then came the fun part (and the time-consuming part): actually watching some of these movies! Some were definite “no”s pretty quickly. I was really I am looking for that specific kind of delicate storytelling, and a lot of movies just didn’t have it.

Some Contenders

I don’t have a perfect list, and, honestly, I like “Portrait of a lady on fire” the most. It is a movie that can represent my youth.

It’s still a work in progress, and the list might not be perfect. Because, really, nothing is exactly like “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” But the journey of searching, and finding these other films, that’s been kind of awesome in itself. And it is a wonderful process.
