Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into the “Power” universe lately, totally hooked. And after getting through “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” I started itching for something similar. That gritty, coming-of-age-in-the-drug-game vibe? I needed more. So, I started hunting.
First, I jotted down what I loved about “Raising Kanan”: the 90s setting, the family drama, the ruthless ambition, the soundtrack. That was my starting point.
Then, I hit up Google. I’m not gonna lie, my first few searches were pretty basic: “shows like Raising Kanan”, “crime dramas set in the 90s,” stuff like that. I skimmed through a bunch of articles and listicles, making a note of anything that sounded remotely interesting.

My Watchlist Begins to Grow
I started building a watchlist. Reddit became my best friend. I lurked on subreddits dedicated to crime shows and period dramas, soaking up recommendations. People were throwing around names like “Snowfall,” “The Wire,” and “BMF.”
- “Snowfall”: This one kept popping up. Set in the 80s crack epidemic in LA, it seemed like a perfect fit. I added it to the list, high priority.
- “The Wire”: Everyone calls it a masterpiece, but I was hesitant because it is older. I decided to give it a shot.
- “BMF”: This one is directly connected to the “Power” universe, so it was a no-brainer. I slotted it in right after finishing “Raising Kanan” season two.
- Godfather of Harlem – Saw it in a group. Some suggested. I add it up.
I spent a good few hours just researching, reading reviews, and watching trailers. It’s a whole process, you know? You don’t want to waste time on a show that’s not going to scratch that itch.
Finally, I narrowed it down to a solid handful of shows. I’m currently working my way through “Snowfall,” and it’s definitely hitting the spot. “The Wire” is next, and I’m actually pretty excited about it, despite my initial hesitation.
So yeah, that’s my journey. From craving more “Raising Kanan” to finding a whole bunch of shows that deliver that same gritty, intense drama. It took some digging, but I’m pretty happy with my finds.
