Love Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash? | Other Anime Like Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash You Should Watch

Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into anime lately, trying to find something that really hits that sweet spot, you know? I stumbled upon this one called “Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash” and let me tell you, it was a trip. I wanted more like it, so I started hunting.

First, I tried rewatching “Grimgar” like five times. Didn’t really work, got kinda bored after a while. It’s a great show, but once you know what’s gonna happen, it loses a bit of that magic, right?

So, I hit up all the usual anime forums. Reddit, MyAnimeList, you name it. I made posts asking for recommendations similar to “Grimgar.” I got a bunch of responses, some good, some, well, not so much. People were throwing out all sorts of names. “Sword Art Online” was a popular one, but it’s a bit too flashy for what I was looking for. I wanted something a bit more grounded, like “Grimgar.”

My Search for the perfect anime

I started compiling a list of the most frequently recommended anime, and then I went down the rabbit hole of watching trailers and reading reviews. Some of them seemed promising, but a lot of them just didn’t capture that same feeling I got from “Grimgar.”

  • I checked out “Log Horizon” because someone said it had a similar focus on party dynamics, but it was way too focused on the game mechanics. It is not my type.
  • Then I tried “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” which had a cool setting, but the main character was just too overpowered. It’s too cheesy and hard to resonate with.
  • I even gave “Goblin Slayer” a shot, thinking it might have that same dark fantasy vibe, but it was a bit too edgy for my taste, I don’t like it.

After watching a few episodes of each, I realized that finding an exact replica of “Grimgar” was gonna be tough. It’s a pretty unique show in how it portrays the struggles of ordinary people thrown into a fantasy world. But I did end up finding a few other anime that I really enjoyed, even if they weren’t exactly the same.

I watched “Made in Abyss” and it totally blew me away. It’s a completely different vibe from “Grimgar,” but it’s also a dark fantasy with amazing world-building and a real sense of danger. It also had some moments of intense sadness and happiness.

Oh, and I also discovered “Hai to Gensou no Grimgar: Level.1 – Sasayaki, Eishou, Inori, Mezameyo.” It’s a light novel, not an anime, but it’s the source material for “Grimgar” and it goes way deeper into the characters and the world. So after I read the novel, I am sure that I have a better understanding of the anime.

So yeah, that’s been my journey so far. I didn’t find another “Grimgar,” but I found some other great stuff along the way. It’s been a wild ride, but I’m still on the hunt for that next anime that’s gonna hit me right in the feels.
