Okay, so I was browsing around, trying to find something cool to watch, and I got this idea: “What are some movies like ‘The French Connection’?” You know, that classic 1971 film? It’s got that gritty, realistic vibe, and I’m totally into that. So, I decided to do a deep dive and find some similar movies.
First thing I did was hit up Google. Just typed in “movies like The French Connection” and scrolled through the results. There were a bunch of lists and articles, but nothing really grabbed me. They were just spitting out names without really explaining why those movies were similar. I wanted to understand why, not just look at a list of titles.
So, I changed up my strategy. I started thinking about what I liked most about “The French Connection.” It’s the raw, realistic portrayal of police work, the intense car chases, and that whole 70s New York City atmosphere. With that in mind, I started looking up movies with similar themes. I searched for things like “gritty cop movies,” “70s crime dramas,” and “movies with realistic car chases.”
This got me some better results. I stumbled upon a few forums where people were discussing similar movies. I read through the comments, seeing what others were recommending. Some kept mentioning films like “Serpico” and “Dirty Harry” – both from the same era, dealing with tough cops in tough situations.
Here’s My Watch List
- “Serpico” (1973) – This one’s about a real-life cop who exposed corruption in the NYPD. Sounds like it’s got the same gritty realism as “The French Connection.”
- “Dirty Harry” (1971) – Clint Eastwood as a hard-nosed cop who doesn’t play by the rules. Plus, it’s got some iconic scenes and lines.
- “The Seven-Ups” (1973) – Apparently, this one was made by the same producer as “The French Connection,” and it even features some of the same actors. The car chase is supposed to be epic, too.
- “Bullitt” (1968) – I know this one is a bit earlier, but people keep saying the car chase is legendary. Steve McQueen is in it, so I guess that’s a good sign.
- “Marathon Man” (1976) – This seems more like a thriller, but it’s set in New York City in the same era. I read some reviews saying it has the same kind of tense, paranoid atmosphere.
I ended up creating a whole watchlist based on my findings. I’m pretty excited to check these out. I’ll probably start with “Serpico” since it seems the most similar in terms of theme and setting.
