Alright, let’s talk about movies like “Mulholland Drive.” I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I finally decided to dive deep and see what I could find.
First off, I started by simply brainstorming. You know, just jotting down anything that came to mind when I thought about “Mulholland Drive.” I came up with stuff like “dream-like,” “confusing,” “Hollywood,” “identity,” and “mystery.” These are the words that stick with me after watching it.
Then, I hit up the internet. I went to some movie forums and started reading what other people were saying. I saw a lot of mentions of other David Lynch films, especially “Lost Highway” and “Inland Empire.” Some people call these his “Los Angeles Trilogy.” Makes sense, they all have that weird, hazy vibe going on. And they all seem to mess with your head when it comes to who’s who and what’s real.
I also stumbled upon some lists of movies “similar” to “Mulholland Drive.” One list had like 72 films on it! Another one had over a thousand! Crazy, right? I saw a bunch of titles pop up more than once, like “Persona” (1966), “Blue Velvet” (1986), and even some by David Cronenberg like “eXistenZ” and “Spider.” People talk about a dream-like vibe being a common thread, and I totally get it.
So I started watching some of these. I watched “Blue Velvet” again. It is also very classic. And I finally saw “Persona” – wow, that one’s a trip! It’s all about two women and their identities kind of… merging? It’s hard to explain, but it definitely reminded me of the whole Betty/Diane/Camilla/Rita situation in “Mulholland Drive.”
My Watchlist
Based on my research and what I’ve seen so far, I made a little watchlist for myself:
- “Lost Highway” – I’ve seen parts of it before, but I need to watch the whole thing from start to finish.
- “Inland Empire” – This one’s supposed to be even more out there than “Mulholland Drive,” so I’m both excited and a little scared.
- “eXistenZ” – Virtual reality and body horror? Sounds like a wild ride.
- “Spider” – The “psychic fugue” thing that someone mentioned sounds intriguing.
- “Wicker Park” – someone said it’s like a “user-friendly” “Lost Highway,” so I’m curious.
This whole thing has been a real rabbit hole. But it’s been fun! It’s like, the more I watch, the more I appreciate how unique “Mulholland Drive” is, but also how it fits into this larger world of weird, mind-bending cinema. I also found that “Mulholland Drive” is also a very meaningful movie, because it reveals the dark side of the Hollywood. I think I will keep digging and see what other gems I can uncover. Maybe I’ll share an update once I’ve made my way through more of these. And if you also like this kind of movie, you can start to watch according to my list, too!
