The story’s real similar: a cop undercover with the Triads and a gangster working as a mole inside the police force. The tension is thick as molasses, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride. It’s a little older, but the plot is just as sharp as anything you’ll find today.
New World (2013)
If you want a film that’s got that slow-burn tension like The Departed, then New World is worth a watch. Directed by Park Hoon-Jung, this Korean crime thriller will mess with your mind, just like Scorsese did. It follows a cop who gets deep into the underworld, only to find himself caught between loyalty to his fellow officers and the gangsters he’s working with. The movie’s full of twists and turns, and by the end, you’ll be sitting there like, “What just happened?”
Heat (1995)
Speaking of gritty, Heat is a must-watch for any fan of The Departed. It’s got that same blend of crime, betrayal, and tension that makes you feel like something’s always about to blow up. If you’re a fan of Scorsese’s The Departed, then you can’t ignore his other masterpiece, Casino. While it’s not exactly the same kind of film, it shares that deep dive into the world of crime and the people who live in it. It’s all about Las Vegas, and how greed, betrayal, and power struggles come to play in the world of casinos and the mob. It’s a long film, but if you got the patience, it’s well worth it.
The Godfather Trilogy (1972-1990)
You really can’t talk about gangster movies without mentioning The Godfather. It’s the foundation of all mob movies, and if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ve got to see it.
